Keith Payne is a Professor of Psychology at the University of North Carolina and an expert in the psychology of inequality and discrimination and in this fascinating, eye-opening, must-read book that has completely changed the way I think about the subject, he sets out in easy-to-understand chapters just how deeply inequality permeates society, influencing decisions, opportunities and even health. The Broken Ladder: How Inequality Affects the Way We Think, Live, and Die by Keith Payne Inequality is a hot topic at the moment and I think that this book adds a lot to the topic beyond the dry economics and I think really brings home why it is such an issue and such a tragedy. This is a fascinating, informative and human book and one that I think a lot of people would benefit by reading and as such, it’s one of my must-reads for 2018 and will ensure that I will check out Payne’s other work. When we talk about income inequality or poverty, we tend to look at its effect at the macro level. Its negative impacts on the society at large, and the macroeconomy. In looking at income inequality or poverty with those prisms, we lose its impact on the psychological, social, and other relational effects on the individual or group. This book tells how income inequality and poverty affects the way a person thinks, his health, etc. The book also debunks some widely held belief about causes and definition of income inequality. Payne argues that income inequality is not only a matter of the amount of money people have; instead, income inequality is more about peoples sense of where they stand in relation to others. Citing research from such fields as neuroscience, psychology, Payne connects income inequality and poverty to peoples stress levels, why women in poor societies often have more children, why peoples perception of their social status affects their political beliefs. Its a book Ill recommend to conservatives, policymakers.
